Leicester instructors – delivery ready and on the road to Level 2 qualification
Six Leicester City Council Bikeability instructors took part in a Delivery Ready and Recognised Prior Learning course in October. The course, run by the Be Confident Group (BikeRight! and Cycle Confident combined RDC) equipped the instructors with the skills and knowledge to deliver against the new National Standards and start them on their journey to a 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training.
The course
Day 1 of the course was all about delivery of the new standard. Each area of the standard was covered in detail, with special focus on how the standard links with delivery, can be tailored to the scheme and embedding active learning in to every-day practice.
On Day 2 learners completed a 1st4sport course enrolment session, giving them a clear pathway for completing the qualification. This included learner registration, access to an e-portfolio and guidance through the process with examples and individualised learning plans. This will all facilitate a smooth qualification process with full post-course support and preparation for PCAs. Participants completed a number of the e-learning modules on the day.
All current National Standard instructors are expected to register with an RDC for recognition of prior learning by August 2021. Schemes and instructors can benefit from attending a combined delivery alignment and RPL course so that they are well ahead of the curve and already delivering the new standard in time for the next Bikeability year.
Feedback from participants
“I am sure that many Instructors view the changes from Status to Qualification as challenging but necessary. As the courses demonstrated, the changes to delivery and the RPL route should be identified as exemplifying continual professional development. BikeRight!’s approach was structured and captivating; two very intense but extremely worthwhile days.” Colin Cheney – Scheme Manager, Leicester City Council.
“I thought that the course was very useful and informative on the changes to Bikeabilty Training. The tutor had obviously spent a lot of time going through the two publications that were issued to us – The Bikeability Delivery Guide & National Standard for Cycle Training.” Steve Hill – Instructor
“The course was very well run and all the information was interesting. The team of tutors were very helpful and friendly.” Donna Bishop – Instructor
“It was a pleasure to have Steve as a trainer once again. He always presents the materials succinctly in his own inimitable and professional manner whilst maintaining an approachable and friendly persona.” Mike Ball – Instructor
